Do you need a car if you are staying in Frigate Bay?
If you plan to stay on the Strip and the beach in front of your hotel, a taxi is enough. If you want to be out at Cockleshell Beach, Brimstone Hill or Basseterre on most days, a car costs less than the taxis and covers every other trip too.
The St Kitts Tourism Authority publishes maximum taxi fares. In April 2026 that put the airport to Frigate Bay at around US$20 for up to four people, and Basseterre to Cockleshell Bay at about US$40 each way. A Cockleshell beach day by taxi is about US$80 there and back from Basseterre, a little less from Frigate Bay. Three of those days come close to US$240. Three days with a car delivered to your hotel cost US$219 with the permit, and the car also takes you to dinner in Basseterre and back to the airport.
Frigate Bay is the island’s main resort area, which is why so many visitors stay there. It is also the closest beach area to both the airport and the cruise port, so every drive from it is short. Our Frigate Bay guide covers North and South Frigate Bay and the Strip in detail.
Which hotels and condos do you deliver to?
Any address in Frigate Bay. On the Atlantic side that includes the St Kitts Marriott Resort, the Royal St Kitts Hotel, Ocean’s Edge and the condominium developments around the Royal St Kitts Golf Club. On the Caribbean side it includes the hotels and condos above South Frigate Bay and the Strip.
For a gated condo, tell us the gate name or unit number when you book. For a villa without a street number, a pin from Google Maps or WhatsApp is the fastest way to find you.
Where can you drive from Frigate Bay?
Basseterre is about 3 miles away, roughly ten minutes by car. The road south from Frigate Bay climbs straight to Timothy Hill Lookout, then runs down the southeast peninsula to South Friars Bay, Cockleshell Beach and Major’s Bay, where the car ferry leaves for Nevis.
Going the other way, Brimstone Hill Fortress is 35 to 45 minutes from Port Zante, and the full loop around the island takes about 45 minutes to an hour without stops. Our guide to driving the full island loop has the route and the stops worth making.
Where do you park in Frigate Bay?
Parking along the Strip on South Frigate Bay is free. The Marriott and the other hotels have their own car parks for guests. The only time spaces get tight is on the busiest cruise ship days, when day visitors drive out to the Strip.
What do you need to drive?
Your driving licence from home, your passport or photo ID, and a St Kitts temporary driving permit. Buy the permit online before you arrive, through the Police e-services portal, and the handover at your hotel is quicker.
Traffic in St Kitts drives on the left, and every car we rent is an automatic, so your left hand has no gear stick to manage. Our guide to the temporary driving permit covers the online application step by step, and driving in St Kitts covers the roundabouts and speed limits.
